UTEC GOALS

Create a pool of well-trained high school students who can successfully complete undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in the health professions, biomedical research, and public health
Sponsor and implement courses that prepare undergraduate students to pursue advanced studies in public health disciplines
Provide high school and undergraduate students with hands-on experiences that create interest in biomedical research and health-related professions

SLAM

We are accepting applications for this summer’s Science, Language Arts, and Mathematics (SLAM) Program. The SLAM application is available online at www.tinyurl.com/2024SLAMApp

The Science, Language Arts and Mathematics (SLAM) Workshops are conducted during the summer at Tougaloo College. SLAM Workshop I is for students who most recently completed the ninth grade, SLAM Workshop II is for students who most recently completed the tenth grade, and SLAM Workshop III is for students who most recently completed the eleventh grade. The three workshops are sequential with each one building on the material from the previous workshop. However, students are not required to complete the workshops sequentially.

The workshops are designed to strengthen the communication and quantitative skills critical to the study of science. In addition, the workshops provide information about the Jackson Heart Study, as well as career opportunities in the health sciences and biomedical research.

Classes in each SLAM workshop session are taught by college professors and instructors from schools in the Jackson metropolitan area. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. HOUSING IS NOT PROVIDED.

Applications for the SLAM workshops are posted on the Tougaloo College website (https://www.tougaloo.edu/academics/programs/jackson-heart-study) in January each year. There is no application fee. However, students who are selected to participate in SLAM must submit a non-refundable deposit to secure their slots.

Each year, twelve freshmen students at Tougaloo College are selected from a competitive pool of applicants and designated as JHSUTEC Scholars.

Benefits of the UTEC Scholars Program

•Scholars learn about public health and related disciplines through the JHSUTEC sponsored courses and related activities.

•Scholars are introduced to career opportunities in public health, biomedical research, and other health-related professions.

•Scholars conduct research under the mentorship of health professionals and scientists and present their research findings on the local and national levels.

•Scholars earn stipends.
•During the academic year, Freshmen Scholars earn $300 per month. Sophomore Scholars earn $350 per month. Junior and Senior Scholars earn up to $500 per month.

•During the summer, Scholars who have completed the freshmen year earn up to $3150. Scholars who have completed their sophomore and junior years earn up to $4500.

Students invited to return to SLAM II or SLAM III do not need to re-apply.

Twelve freshmen are selected every year and are designated as Jackson Heart Study Scholars. The Scholars may major in any field of their choice

Requirements for UTEC Scholars

● Scholars must successfully complete all UTEC sponsored courses: Introduction to Public Health and Epidemiology (Fall-Sophomore year), Biostatistics (Spring-Sophomore year), Research Methods in Public Health and Epidemiology (Fall-Junior year), and Ethics Medicine and Technology (Spring-Junior year or Spring-Senior year).
● Scholars must maintain a GPA of 3.0 every semester.
● Scholars must mentor high school students in the SLAM workshops and other UTEC sponsored activities for ten weeks during the summer following the freshmen year.
● Scholars must participate in a research practicum for at least eight weeks during the summers following the sophomore and junior years.
● Scholars attend seminars and other activities designated by the UTEC.

Mid and End of Year Performance Evaluations of Current UTEC Scholars
All students who desire to continue in the UTEC Scholars program will be evaluated in the following three areas: PERFORMANCE, ATTITUDE and BEHAVIOR. Failure to meet one or more of the criteria will constitute grounds for termination from the program.
